The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an attractive marine influence on the nose, which takes you straight out to sea. The palate is medium-bodied with much redder fruit than the Gevrey-Lavaux '13: not complex, but nicely balanced with a lithe, harmonious finish that feels gentle, almost understated. I like that.
**Note: from a .33 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines in Charmes proper**
There is a discreet but not invisible touch of wood framing the very fresh nose of red and dark cherry along with notes of newly turned earth, humus and a lovely floral hint. Here too there is both fine volume and good energy to the slightly bigger tension-filled flavors that terminate in an ever-so-mildly edgy finish. There is quite a bit of gas present which complicates judging the phenolic maturity of the supporting structure and hence my predicted range is a bit wider than it usually is.
