The 2018 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru has a little more fruité on the nose compared to the Echézeaux, offering cranberry, raspberry and light aromas of damp woodland. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, fine acidity and a lightly spiced, quite linear finish that feels persistent and satisfying. Superb.
This too is mildly reduced which does in the fruit but not the earth and spice nuances. Otherwise there is fine power and punch to the delicious, robust and full-bodied flavors that are shaped by very raspy, indeed somewhat chewy, tannins on the noticeably wood-inflected finish. This appears to have the requisite density to eventually buffer the tannins as they resolve but at present the balance is awkward.
